Unless you like wine that sucker punches your palate with the essence of dirt mixed with acid, I disagree that Oregon produces the world's finest Pinot Noir. However, Vieng Oudom's Sommi Wine Cellars make a pretty good case for the state's being home to the world's finest wine storage cabinets. Oudom handcrafts each of his handsome treasure chests and their interior racking systems from your choice of fir, cherry, or walnut wood sourced directly from Northwest suppliers. He even hand-forges their hardware. The cellars also arrive fully insulated and fitted with complete refrigeration systems.

In addition to wood type, Sommi Wine Cellar door handles and racking configurations are custom built to each buyer's specifications. Oudom offers 2 standard cellar sizes, the Model VV1, scaled to hold 448 wine bottles of various sizes, and the Model VV2, with space for 280. The former measures 75" wide x 32" deep x 95" tall, and the latter 50" x 32" x 80". Insulation consists of high-performance Polyisocyanurate R13. The cooling system is a CellarPro 1800XT, which Oudom says operates virtually silently while keeping interior temperatures and humidity constant.

Lead time for a built-to-order Sommi Wine Cellar is 6 to 8 weeks.
