I know store-bought tortillas aren't exactly a wallet vacuum, and making them yourself won't really save any money, but if Flatev's claims are to be trusted, this electric countertop tortilla churner requires 0 skills to operate and spits out superior homemade Mexican discs of joy in less than a minute. As someone who eats fresh, hot, made-to-order corn tortillas at a Mexican restaurant called Rosita's 1 to 4 times per week, one thing I will say is that fresh, hot, made-to-order corn tortillas are F'ing delicious. There are the dry, cardboardy prepackaged grocery store stacks, there are the housemade, but lukewarm and flaccid, restaurant iterations, and then there are the dough pod to conveyor oven to my mouth Flatev tortillas. And though the company is still just collecting interested parties' email for pre-order, with an estimated machine price of less than $300, if you're a fan of carne asada tacos, fish tacos, or choco tacos, Flatev may be your kitchen gadget extraordinaire.

Or, as these things sometimes go, it may never make it to production, or prove to be a POS.

For the optimists, Flatev, like a Keurig coffee maker (and about the same size), uses pods to create its tortillas. Pods filled with either flour- or corn-based dough. Expected to cost less than $1 each, pods contain all necessary tortilla ingredients, so using them requires no more effort than dropping one into the Flatev and pushing start. From there, the machine pops open the pod, presses it, and cooks it. When complete, it spits the tortilla onto a bottom tray, where it stays warm until you're ready to eat.

Flatev corn tortilla pods contain stoneground corn flour and water (that's it) and flour pods flour, water, baking soda, and salt. The company plans to make them available in different flavors as well, such as Chili, Honey, and Cheese.

June 2016: Flatev recently completed a successful, $130,000+ crowdfunding campaign, and hopes to deliver the machines to backers in Summer 2017. If you're interested in owning one, and didn't get your pledge in, head over to the Flatev site to find further information on pre-ordering.
