Check It Out

Grab your friend Cornelius, and then grab this 2-pack of Power-Up 3.0 RC paper airplanes for 20% off from Dude Exclusives. If you're really skilled, you can even trash text during flight since the RCs for these diving sheets of looseleaf are your smartphones.

We've seen electric paper airplanes. And we've seen flights of fancy controlled by smartphones. But never before in the history of mankind's existence on the universe have we seen an electric paper airplane controlled by a smartphone. I know. Someone pass me the smelling salts--the ladies in the front row have beheld the PowerUp 3.0, and are one fold from fainting.

OK. The revolutionariness of a smartphone-controlled paper airplane might not be on par with that of, say, an engine-controlled metal airplane that transports human beings across the United States in 5-1/2 hours, but it's still pretty nifty. And a lot cheaper. And doesn't require hanging around in its vicinity for a full 2 hours before you are given permission to use it.

As the name suggests, the PowerUp 3.0 is a next installment of Power Up Toys' paper airplanes (the 2.0 is the aforementioned electric version, but has no remote control). It syncs with a smartphone app for pilots to fly and maneuver from up to 180' away.

The plane's Smart Module itself is constructed of a crash-proof carbon fiber frame and fitted with a rechargeable lithium polymer battery pack. It connects to any piece of user-folded copier paper with PowerUp's clips, and to smartphones via Bluetooth. Once ready to launch, the app interface enables the plane to ascend/descend using the digital throttle lever, and move right or left in accordance with the tilt of the phone. Additional readouts include a battery level indicator (each charge is good for about 10 minutes of fly time), a charging status indicator, a range indicator, and a thrust level indicator. Also depicted are an artificial horizon and air traffic control.
