The 14 Coolest Campers, RVs, Trailers & Caravans
The 14 coolest campers, RVs, trailers & caravans: coming to a road trip near you in Summer 2020. You, plus thousands and thousands - and thousands! - of your fellow vacationers.
Predictions for summer travel, and travel in general since the COVID-19 pandemic has made social distancing the buzz phrase of the year, are that families and thrill seekers will still go trippin' in the coming months, but many of them will opt for destinations accessible via wheels rather than wings. Likewise, the BYO sleeping, eating, bathing, and pooping provisions approach will also experience a surge in popularity.
Which means...campers, RVs, trailers, and caravans! And these are 14 of the coolest out there.
Earth Traveler Ultralight Teardrop Trailers
I nominate bench pressing an Earth Traveler teardrop trailer for an event in the next CrossFit Games. Or maybe a World's Toughest Mudder obstacle of harnessing a 250-pound Earth T250LX to a runner's back and having him or her haul it a few hundred yards.
Hand-built and custom-made with fuel-efficient and electric vehicles in mind, Earth Traveler teardrop trailers are ultralight campers aiming to bring an RV camping and road tripping experience to everyone. The trailers are available in two models, the luxury, 100% carbon fiber T250LX, and a slightly heavier, 300-pound T300 made of fiberglass and resin reinforced feathers. Both are one-piece builds, and have closed dimensions of 5' x 5' x 11', expanding to 11' x 7' x 11' when open.
Vintage Overland Caravans
From the welded steel frame to the oversized door to the hardwood interior, Vintage Overland constructs every one of its caravans by hand. And since the adventurers who use them are some of the very same who build them, engineering and design focus on ruggedness, durability, and effortless travel as much as simple luxuries and modern amenities. Whether used as gear haulers or cozy weekend campers, Vintage Overland promises its caravans will function with equal pluck.
Caravans come in 3 models, named The Tuco, The Great Escape, and the T.E. Lawrence. The first two are sized similarly, with 4' wide x 8' long cabin dimensions. T.E. Lawrence is slightly more spacious at 5' wide x 8' long.
UEV-490 ST Urban Escape Vehicle
Conqueror Australia's Urban Escape Vehicle, or UEV, version 490 ST is one of the best monstrosities I've ever seen. The rugged luxury camper is suitable for both on- and off-road wheeled treks, and comes fully-loaded with amenities tailored to the buyer's specifications. In other words, the UEV-490 ST is the ideal companion for people who want to muscle through rocky, sandy, snowy, or water-filled terrain, but do not want to give up microwave popcorn and binge watching Stranger Things and What We Do in the Shadows on a flat screen during the journey.
The UEV-490's independent trailing arm suspension system gives it the latitude needed to hitch up to any compatible off-road vehicle and roll with the bumps, drops, and splashes without sustaining damage or, worse, slowing its driver down. The patented system includes coil springs and Tough Dog shock absorbers, integrated rear legs (i.e., no loose jacks or handles), 12" off-road electric drum brakes, and various wheel styles and configuration options to suit the driver's intended caravan use. The suspension ride is also configurable based on on- or off-road use.
Polydrop Trailers
It's a road trip spaceship! Polydrop Trailers are geometric campers designed to look and act like they're something from another place, another time.
The Polydrop energy system is supported entirely by a 100W solar panel and battery, including the trailer's heater, optional AC, optional fridge, roof fan, LED lights 12V outlet, and USB outlet. Models come with up to 8.7" of insulation, as well as hydraulic disc brakes and Timbren independent suspension for total comfort both while inside and while towing the Polydrop. Adding to the cozy and out-of-this-world feeling, the Polydrop interior is fashioned after a space capsule, with the trailer's control panel built and placed for easy access from any position on the 48" x 75" mattress.
Polydrops has 4 Polydrop Trailer models available for 2020, each the same 149" long x 65.6" wide dimensions and design, but with different material, layout, and add-on options.
EarthRoamer LTi with Carbon Fiber Camper
EarthRoamer continues their global expedition efforts with the LTi, a road tripper whose juicy center is a camper with an all carbon fiber body. EarthRoamer considers its LTi the most advanced of the 250+ expedition vehicles they've ever made.
The LTi camper achieves its carbon fiber frame via a vacuum infusion process, which bonds 2 carbon fiber skins to a structural foam core. The result is a monocoque carbon fiber body that, true to the material, is ultra strong and ultra light.
Probably helps compensate a bit for the beast of a chassis that carries it, a Ford F-550.
Winnebago Solis Pop-Top Camper Van
The Winnebago's spankin' new Solis camper is built on a Ram Promaster chassis, and features all-season insulation and plumbing, a 220W solar panel, and a heated bathroom / wet gear drying room. There's also a space-expanding rear door prop with privacy screen.
Winnebago further expands Solis space with a fiberglass pop-top overhead. It raises on hinges to create loft sleeping for 2 with the FROLI sleep system, plus let in the panoramic views. Down below there's also cross-coach sleeping for 2 more, with the option to upgrade the Winnie with a sofa sleeper to create a total of 6 belted seats. Hmmm, sounds cozy.
The Solis extends 19'6" long, with an exterior height of 18'11", and interior dimensions of 6'2" high x 6'4" wide. Wonder if the Winnebago Man would approve.
Hitch Hotel Expandable Trailer
I wouldn't call the Hitch Hotel the Ritz-Carlton of trailers and campers. But with it's compact, easily towed design, multi-functional use, and expandability and efficiency as a sleeping space, the Hitch Hotel is definitely up there with, like, a new, clean Holiday Inn Express.
Hitch Hotel wants to brand itself as a mobile hotel room. A bypasser of reservations, an eliminator of tents, a dodger of DMV restrictions. And while most hotel rooms I've stayed in have had electricity and enough head clearance that I can stand upright in them, I do see where Hitch Hotel is going with the comparison.
The tagalong trailer gives you the freedom to drive unencumbered and set up an instant, protected sleeping space about anywhere you find some space. Unlike standard trailers, the Hitch Hotel contracts down to a 60-cubic-square-foot box that can hitch up to any vehicle with a minimum Class 2 hitch. When you're ready to crash, a pair of adjustable legs unfold and lock on the ground, and the Hitch Hotel pulls open to 135 cubic feet of space suitable for 2 to 3 adults. From there, you can leave it connected to your vehicle, or un-hitch it and park elsewhere.
Off-Road Air Opus Pop-Up Camper
The Off-Road Air Opus is British RV brand Opus' newest addition to its inflatable folding camper family. First available in September 2019, the more rugged upgrade to the Air Opus trailer adds "total off grid freedom in luxurious comfort" to standard Opus standouts, such as a compact, easily towed design, and Air Tent technology that enables the inflation of the camper's enveloping 6-person tent in 90 seconds, with the push of a button.
TAXA Mantis Camper
The last time I doled out the kind of TAXA people actually want to pay for, it was in mighty mite form. The TAXA TigerMoth Trailer is a small, lightweight camper intended for towing by 4-cylinder vehicles. TAXA's latest towable, the Mantis, is more family-friendly at 19' long, with a full kitchen, and enough interior space to sleep 4 adults. Two of them can even cuddle up together in the Mantis' primary bed, topped with a full-size mattress.
The other two will have to rochambeau for the bottom bunk.
Bowlus Road Chief Luxury Aluminum Travel Trailer
The Bowlus Road Chief appears to require a new addition to pop culture lingo. What's the luxury aluminum travel trailer equivalent of "glamping"? Splend-RVing? Road pimping?
At printing, the Bowlus Road Chief RV model of the day was the Endless Highways, a flashy aluminum looker that's also light enough to hitch to almost any SUV or crossover, or equally luxury EVs, such as the Tesla X.
Happier Camper HC1
The "retro-modern" HC1 is an ultra-light trailer that prides itself on folding a host of contemporary engineering concepts into a nostalgic, surf's up design.
The camper's fiberglass construction has a dry weight of just 1,100 pounds, making it tow compatible with most vehicles. More notably, a trademarked Adaptiv modular interior system makes the HC1 fully customizable to suit both individual and circumstantial needs. Add, remove, or rearrange modules comprising the trailer's floor and furniture to accommodate camping one weekend, hauling the next, and your friend Maurice who has been temporarily ejected from his girlfriend's townhouse the one after that.
Sealander Land & Water Camper
The Sealander is a caravan that gives you the best of boat worlds. Yuk, yuk, yuk. Designed and made in Germany, the hybrid camper latches on to any car, truck, or SUV like a travel trailer for driving, but is also made light and sealed tight enough to slide into the water and float or tool around in on nearby lakes and bays.
The Sealander has a 13-square-foot footprint, with a bench-lined interior with table that can accommodate 6 people sitting. The benches also transform into a flat sleeping or lounging space, with the camper's fold-back roof opening to 2/3 exposure for sunbathing or stargazing. Anyone purchasing a Sealander will have a range of customization options, including a kitchenette and appliances, upholstery, sound system, lighting, and other interior electronics.
Tonke Fieldsleeper Camper
The Tonke Fieldsleeper isn't just a camper, it's a camper straight out of The Brady Bunch. Check out that wood paneling and groovy baby blue laminate interior. Sure, mint green or rusty orange would have been better, but really all that's missing is the brick chimney wall and Marcia, Marcia, Marcia.
No, scratch that. If I'm going on a road trip in a sweet Tonke RV, I'm taking Alice to keep my 17' nose-to-tail of living space tidy and my belly full. I bet she could get pretty creative with a bag of groceries from the 7-Eleven.
Hand-built in Terheijden, Holland, Fieldsleeper Classic Campers come in 5 different versions of detachable RV designed specifically to hitch to the Fiat Ducato or Mercedes Sprinter chassis-cab. An optional unloading system completes the attach / detach process in 10 minutes, in case you want to drive the vehicle solo, or set the camper up as a guest house or B&B room.
Tvan Off-Road Camper Trailer
This is Tvan, and if you're barreling through dirt and rocks with one of the off-road camper trailers bounding along behind you, then you're Tman. The Man. The one who's got the beauty and freedom of the path less traveled ahead of him, and the military grade MC2 Suspension to support going down it out back.
