Interesting to wake up this morning to news of Amazon's Halo Rise - wake up the old-fashioned way, from a cat walking across my face, not via a sunrise-simulating wake-up light or smart alarm. And certainly with no hard analytics on my sleep quality to reassure me I feel like shit because I slept like shit.

But back to my original point: interesting to hear of the Halo Rise today, because just yesterday I was talking to my wife, She-Ra: Princess of Power, about how it would be nice if Audible paired with the Apple Watch, or another sleep tracker, to detect when you fall asleep, and automatically stop your audio book at that moment. You currently have the option to set a sleep timer, but She-Ra's point is, how the juicy / crappy plot line are you supposed to know how much longer you have in you to listen once you go horizontal, all tucked in and surrounded by darkness?

I said that no way would Audible team up with Apple or Oura Ring or anyone else because Amazon owns Audible and it would be a cold day in warehouse hell before they did anything that could make someone else money at no benefit to them. Then I wondered if maybe Amazon was working on their own watch or health tracker.

And, voila! The Halo Rise does just that with the sun this morning.

Though not a full health tracker, and certainly not a wearable, the Halo Rise does measure your sleep - quantity and quality - and makes suggestions on how to improve it on the companion Halo app. Perhaps more appealing to people who don't like rings and wristbands and chunking tech touching them while they snooze, the Halo Rise is happy to be a background apparatus. You don't have to don it or charge it, and you don't need to keep it in your bed.

According to Amazon, the Halo Rise uses "low-energy, sensor technology to track body movement and breathing," plus measures room temperature, humidity, and light. That means, while not in the bed, you do need to keep the Halo Rise right next to your bed, and point it towards your upper body. Does it also mean you can't roll over, or change your position throughout the night? What if your wife gets all up in your business at some point? Or, more likely, the aforementioned cat?

The wake-up light portion of the Halo Rise is pretty self-explanatory, though what Amazon means by "smart alarm" is that the gadget somehow senses your ideal sleep stage for getting up, and triggers the sunrise simulator accordingly.
