Astronaut ice cream was a rare treat, a novelty worthy of much wonder and awe when I was a kid. Now though, like 8lb bags of Lucky Charms marshmallows, and pretty much everything else, you can just buy it in bulk online. The excitement is gone.
The ice cream's weird crunch, and its even weirder segue into a completely dissolved mass of syrupy goo, though, that's still around. That's still the defining, delightful, and sometimes-goose-bump-inducing characteristic of astronaut ice cream. And why there's still a market for it outside NASA.
Oh, and since the dairy bricks are freeze-dried and ultralight, 4 out of five outdoorsmen and 5 out of 5 bears agree it also makes pretty good camping food.
This listing is for a variety 5-pack of astronaut ice cream and ice cream sandwiches, the recipes for which were originally developed for the early Apollo missions. The ice cream "churning" process here involves freezing ice cream to -40 degrees F, and then vacuum drying it.
