Sing it, Rockapella! Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? taught me so much about geography, history, and problem solving as a child. Just like Oregon Trail, which, maybe not so coincidentally, also comes in handheld game form, taught me about diseases of the 1800s and dealing with the deaths of family members. At least 90% of what I learned playing Carmen Sandiego I've forgotten, but some things I did retain:

  • Kathmandu is the capital of Nepal and Oslo is the capital of Norway, and those are the two best country capital names in the world.
  • A gumshoe is a detective. A rookie detective in Carmen Sandiego, if I remember correctly.
  • "Spelunking" is a real thing, not a word made up by Broderbund Entertainment. It means...uh...something to do with caves. Alright, let's say I've forgotten 95%.

The handheld Carmen Sandiego game is retro 80s right down to the graphics, sound, and gameplay, all authentic from the original loaded onto a 5-1/4" floppy disk I gleefully loaded into my Appe IIGS.
