No hand a lot of us could use more right now than a Hygiene Hand. The antimicrobial brass door opener and stylus comes as, shall we say, a first responder in the coronavirus EDC department, but its utility as a handle puller and button / touch screen presser in daily life will endure well beyond our struggles to manage COVID-19. In fact, the Hygiene Hand will probably become even more useful once this global pandemic is over. Once we're able to return to some semblance of normalcy, but with new caution, armed with the knowledge of aaalllll the different surfaces where bacteria, viruses, and other germs are hanging out.

Designed by a retired NY City Paramedic, the Hygiene Hand is cut from a solid piece of brass, an inherently antimicrobial material that can help decrease germy permeation as we get touchy with everyday actions. (Note: brass is unaccommodating, but not 100% resistant to germs; you should still clean and disinfect your Hygiene Hand after use.) The Hygiene Hand shape has been tailored to perform a variety of tasks, with a finger hole grip and pull lever to provide a secure hold while grasping and opening doors, and a blunt nub at the crown of the lever for pressing buttons both physical and on a touchscreen. The nub is touchscreen-sensitive enough to be used as a stylus too, when you need to sign for credit card purchases or prescriptions, and loathe the thought of using the plastic stylus attached to the machine.

The Hygiene Hand also comes with a retractable kevlar keychain cord you can attach to a bag or belt loop to keep the Hand even closer at hand.

Hygiene Hand design and production are a direct response to the coronavirus pandemic, so the tool's creator, Brooklyn-based EDC company StatGear, is running it as a Kickstarter campaign through April 22, 2020. Anticipated ship date for the brass door opener-stylus combo is May-June 2020. Click here to learn more about the Hygiene Hand, and to pledge for one of your own.
